PMC-Sierra Launches Quad 8 G Fibre Channel Controller

Arthur Cole

Web 2.0 applications and high-performance computing clusters are pushing the need for a new generation of networked storage systems that offer not only increased data consolidation capabilities but improved traffic performance as well.

PMC-Sierr is looking to tap into those needs with a new quad 8 Gbps Fibre Channel controller, the PM8032 Tachyon QE8. The company boasts a doubling in performance over existing systems, plus a host of new goodies, like PCIe Gen-II, multiple outbound read requests and 8 Gbps serial link monitoring. It combines ports of 8 Gbps FC with eight lanes of 5 Gbps PCIe 2.0 bandwidth.

The device can be used with the company's line of 4 Gbps systems and SAS/SATA protocol controllers and expanders. A software development kit with source code and drives is also available.
