PCIe for the SPARC T2

Arthur Cole

The lightning-fast Sun SPARC Enterprise T5140 and T5240 servers just got a little faster with the introduction of a pair of PCIe switches optimized for the platform.

PLX Technology designed its 48-lane PEX 8548 switches to work with the UltraSPARC T2 processor through an x8 PCIe link integrated into the processor silicon, providing the ability to fan data out to onboard devices or up to six x8 PCIe slots for expanded I/O operations.

Combined with the T2's dual-socket Chip Multi-Threading technology that supports up to 128 threads, the 8548 provides latency as low as 110 ns with a typical power draw of less than 5 watts. The devices can be configured for x1 to x16 ports, with native Hot-Plug capability for improved reliability.
