New Fault-Tolerant Industrial Switch

Always on the lookout for cool new stuff here at Archi-TECH, we came across this new line of managed industrial Ethernet switches from Advantech featuring a fast-healing fiber-optic ring technology that helps maintain connectivity in dodgy environments.

 

The EKI-7659C is a 10-port device consisting of eight 100Base-TK Fast Ethernet ports and two 1 GB 1000Base-T ports. It is available as an SFP (small form-factor pluggable) module with RJ-45 copper connections, allowing it to function in virtually any application environment. Single- and multi-mode fiber models also are available for connections from 1,800 feet to 70 miles.

 

Most industrial settings require fault-tolerance ratings several orders of magnitude over enterprise environments, so Advantech developed the X-Ring system, which enables backup connections within 10 milliseconds. The X-Ring system also supports dual-ring and coupled-ring technologies, and is backward-compatible with Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) and RSTP service in the enterprise and back office.

 

It also supports the creation of Virtual LANs and features a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server to automatically assign network settings to attached devices, including specific IP addresses to Ethernet ports.
