New Edge Capabilities from Foundry

Arthur Cole

Small form-factor edge routers are getting more powerful and more flexible with a wide variety of capabilities and configurations up for grabs.

Foundry Networks recently launched a new line of its FastIron Edge X Layer 2/3 routers capable of handling up to 512,000 IPv4 and 64,000 IPv6 routes in a 1.5 U design. The FastIron Edge XE devices are available in fiber and copper configurations in either 24- or 48-port densities with optional 2-port 10 GbE modules.

Other features include 88 to 136 Mpps forwarding throughput, 32 MB ingress and egress packet buffering and a non-blocking architecture that maintains wire-speed throughput.

The units are due in May at a list price of $14,995.
