I half expect that in the case of Xcedex, it’s the former. The company has unveiled the X_Factor virtualization planning suite aimed not simply at managing virtual environments once created, but establishing the most efficient and predictable environments ahead of time.

The software relies on data collected from the CollectorX virtual appliance, an agentless collection engine, to perform tasks like candidate selection/exclusion/inclusion, modeling and storage planning. Through a number of channel partners, tools like automated data center assessment, physical-to-virtual migration planning and virtual server and storage capacity planning are also available.

The X_Factor software also allows managers to create a virtualization plan that can be use to automate many of the time-consuming tasks required to establish virtual environments, such as assessing IT inventory and manually review data.
