Even while Intel continues to push the envelope with its CPU designs, the company has been quietly selling off much of its optical technologies.
The company is in the process of selling the remainder of its Optical Platform Division to EMCORE Corp. in an all-share transaction. The division concentrated primarily Ethernet SAN technology, having earlier sold most of its telecom-related operations, also to EMCORE.
The move marks a continuation of EMCORE's plans to bolster it data communications capabilities, largely by providing technology and know-how in 10 GbE transceivers.
For the moment, Intel seems intent on retaining its developing silicon photonics and USB 3.0 technology, which is also expected to have an optical component.
