Expect to see more servers equipped with PCIe 2.0 technology in the near future offering a much needed boost in I/O performance in the wake of growing dual- and quad-core designs.
The newest devices come from IDT, which recently came out with four new PCIe Gen2 switches ranging from a 4-lane/4-port unit to a 24-lane/6-port switch. They effectively double the throughput of existing PCIe lanes to 5 Gbs, which allows system designers to either increase overall bandwidth in and out of a server or to reduce costs by limiting the number of lanes and board traces to meet basic requirements.
IDT also claims to have the best performance-per-watt through "power smart" technologies, although details on this point are sketchy.
The new switches use the same interface technology of previous PCIe Gen2 switches, making integration into existing platforms easier. Sampling begins in January.
