Hitachi Touts 'Backup in a Box'

Arthur Cole

An interesting new low-cost back-up solution came out of Hitachi Data Systems this week, a high-capacity storage appliance aimed at SMBs that provides disaster recovery operations for multiple servers and their primary application sets.

Dubbed Backup in a Box, the device is available in 6, 9 and 12 TB versions with either disk or tape storage and a professional services software bundle that handles installation, configuration and data transfer that gets the system up and running with minimal technical expertise.

Up to 20 servers can be connected, and the system also holds primary applications like Exchange, SQL and SharePoint, ensuring basic enterprise functionality in case major systems are down due to an emergency.

For Hitachi, the Backup in a Box system brings centralized storage and data management to the Services Oriented Storage Solution line, which is the company's play into storage service solutions rather than simple hardware. The trick will be in convincing customers that there is still value in maintaining in-house backup systems instead of simply outsourcing it to the cloud.
