Hifn, AMCC Join Forces on Storage

Arthur Cole

Storage processing firm Hifn and semiconductor developer Applied Micro Circuits Corp. have joined forces on a new reference design that aims to lay the groundwork for a new generation of devices ranging from NAS platforms to VLTs and backup systems.

The design combines AMCC's Power Architecture, based on the high-bandwidth PowerPC core, and Hifn's Applied Services Processor (ASP) capacity optimization technology.

The companies say that the design is only the first piece of a comprehensive development platform for storage manufacturers. The first implementation will be a combination of AMCC's PowerPC 460SX processor with Hifn's Express DR cards to support multiple open storage applications covering tasks like disk-to-disk backup, data deduplication and continuous data protection.
