Google Search Adds Translation Feature

Arthur Cole

Amid all the talk about clouds and IT services, it's easy to forget that Google has the slimmest of toeholds in the enterprise hardware market through the Google Search Appliance.

The latest update for the device is the Cross-Language Search feature that instantly translates search queries into any of 34 languages. So if you speak English and want to find and read sales reports from the French office, the appliance can do that for you with a few mouse-clicks.

The software that provides this feature is customizable by IT admins, so results will vary depending on how the system is set up.

Still, Google says the device offers reliable translation at a lot less cost than a team of language experts on staff. And it gives Google a leg up against search technologies from Microsoft, Endeca and others.
