Fibre Channel over Ethernet had its coming out party this week at Storage Networking World, with leading networking firms QLogic and Emulex showing the technology in their new lines of largely similar adapters.
QLogic brought out the 8000 series Converged Network Adapter (CNA) featuring both Advanced Ethernet and FCoE in a bid to get the jump on the coming era of unified fabrics. The device is designed for easy integration into existing QLogic Fibre Channel SANs in that it uses the same drivers and management tools. The device provides 10 GbE performance to allow users to combine data and storage networking onto a single adapter.
Emulex responded with the LightPulse LP21000 CNA, which also features the same drivers as the existing line of LightPulse HBAs to simplify integration for existing customers. Emulex also provides 10 GbE connectivity as a means to unify the LAN and the SAN under a common network fabric.
Both companies are also working with Cisco to foster interoperability with the new Nexus 5000 switch.
