Ethernet switching is growing more popular, with sales surging 10 percent to $4.6 billion in the third quarter, according to a report from Infonetics.
The research firm reports that much of the growth is due to broad adoption of 10 GbE technology in the Layer 3 fixed switch segment. As expected, Cisco continues to dominate the market, increasing switch revenues about $318 million, about three quarters of the total industry gain.
Ethernet port shipments are also up about 10 percent, led by F5 and NetGear. F5 is also the leader in the application switch market, which is expected to top $1 billion this year.
The only Ethernet segments showing declines in the third quarter were 100M chassis and Power over Ethernet (PoE).
