Emulex Broadens CNA Capabilities

Emulex upped its ante in universal storage technology in a big way this week, coming out with a new line of converged network adapters (CNAs), as well as higher-bandwidth Fibre Channel technology and a new management stack to tie it all together.

The OneConnect line of universal CNAs supports 10 GbE, iSCSI and Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE). The company anticipates that the devices can cut network hardware expenses some 28 percent by unifying various switches and adapters, and cut power consumption nearly in half. When used in conjunction with the company's VEngine technology, the device offers 100 percent CPU offloading for supported protocols, freeing up CPUs to handle a 20 percent increase in virtual machines.

The new line of 8 Gbps Fibre Channel HBAs, meanwhile, has been dubbed SecureConnect due to its integrated encryption capabilities, which the company claims is a cheaper way to encrypt data than through a fabric-based switch, an appliance or at the disk level. The company says it can cut encryption costs upwards of 75 percent.

The OneCommand management software, which will replace the HBAnyware line by mid-year, oversees both the OneConnect line and the existing line of LightPulse HBAs. Emulex will offer the system for third-party integration.
