EMC has quickly discovered that in the cloud, nothing operates in a vacuum.
The company recently tweaked its Retrospect Express software to act as the go-between for the Mozy online service and the Iomega backup drive. The combo provides a unified local and remote backup system for small businesses that combines the wide-area functions of a cloud server with the nearline convenience of disks.
Essentially, the system allows operators to configure both cloud- and disk-based backup from a single Retrospect Express interface, providing the same type of layered backup approach that large corporations enjoy through tiered storage systems.
It also represents a major combination of assets that EMC has acquired over the past few years. Mozy and Retrospect were both picked up earlier in the decade, while Iomega was brought under the EMC fold only last spring.
