EMC, Riverbed Unite over Disaster Recovery

Arthur Cole

A powerful new disaster-recovery solution will be on the shelves soon, the result of a union between two leading WAN optimization and business continuity solutions.

Riverbed Technology's Steelhead WAN appliance was recently qualified by EMC to work with the Symmetrix Remote Data Facility/Asynchronous (SRDF/A) system. The combined solution provides a host-independent, mirrored duplication site capable of speedy replication from remote distances.

The goal according to both companies is to increase both the Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO) in the event of a broad system failure. The Steelhead appliance, outfitted with the RiOS 5.5 operating system, is said to boost the disaster-recovery process five to eight times over normal WAN operation.

The qualification was carried out under EMC's E-Lab program.
