Cisco Joins VMware in the Cloud

Arthur Cole

Many people were wondering what Cisco would come up with for VMworld. Now we know.

The company offered up a new software switch, jointly developed with VMware, designed to help customers build out their cloud computing infrastructures in preparation for the release next year of the VMware Virtual Infrastructure suite.

The Nexus 1000V promises improved management, networking and security of virtual machines to combat problems such as virtual sprawl and complicated provisioning processes. The system is tied to Cisco's new Virtual Network Link (VN-Link) designed to work with VMware's VMotion migration system to better manage VMs across server, storage and network environments.

Both systems will plug directly into the ESX hypervisor, as well as the impending vNetwork Distributed Switch that is being integrated into VMware's Virtual Datacenter OS platform.
