Networking Can Help Drive Energy Efficiency Too

6 Gbps SAS technology is starting to show up at the chip level, ushering in the era of more powerful storage/server combinations using the serial transfer protocol.

PMC-Sierra released a new set of SAS-2 expanders this week, part of the company's bid to provide end-to-end 6 Gpbs SAS/SATA chipset solutions covering everything from protocol and RAID controllers to SPS active-active multiplexers.

The PM8004 SXP 24x6 GSec is a 24-port solution, while the PM8005 SXP 36x6 GSec provides 36 ports. Both units offer diagnostic and fault isolation technology, not to mention the near doubling of I/O throughput by offering 6 Gbps line rate on all ports.

Other features include self-configuring routing tables, support for Spread Spectrum Clocking (CSC) on high-speed SAS links, an adaptable decision feedback equalizer that extends passive cable support to 10 meters and support for 1024 end devices for high-density storage arrays.
