BladeCenter Gains 8 Gbps Fibre Channel Support

Arthur Cole

When it comes to supporting virtual environments on blade infrastructures, the key element is robust networking. So it probably comes as a relief to BladeCenter users that new generations of high-bandwidth technologies are ready for integration into the platform.

QLogic has announced a range of 8 Gbps Fibre Channel solutions for the BladeCenter, including a 20-port SAN switch module and a combo mezzanine card that joins 8 G FC with 1 GbE.

The package is designed to offer end-to-end 8 G Fibre Channel connectivity that supports up to 128 virtual servers through the N_Port ID (NPIV) virtualization format. The setup allows multiple FC initiators to occupy a single physical port, with the ultimate goal of reducing hardware requirements, and the requisite power draw, needed to support virtual SAN environments.

The QLogic devices are compatible with any standards-compliant fabric technology, enabling BladeCenter server and I/O resources to integrate into leading network architectures with full interoperability.

The solution also includes QLogic's Dynamic Power Management and Cool HBA technologies that support energy-efficient operations, as well as a host of features like automated uplink failover and guaranteed streaming capability.

Availability is expected early next year.
