Better SAS Through Universal I/O

Arthur Cole

Serial Attached SCSI configurations should become more flexible and customizable with a series of new universal I/O (UIO) RAID cards developed by Super Micro Computer and LSI Logic.

The AOC-USAS H-Series UIO cards sport the LIS SAS 1078 ROC (RAID-On-Chip) device to deliver RAID 5 and 6 for either external or internal SAS/SATA connections. The card provides a 256 MB DDRII cache at 667 MHz. And because it's installed on the server board, designers still have all PCI-Express and PCI-X expansion slots to work with.

Users also get a range of options when it comes to reconfiguring SAS implementations because the UIO card can be easily swapped out to support various external and internal port configurations. It also has optional battery backup.

Super Micro has a range of card designs that are optimized for the company's CSE series chassis with single- or dual-port expanders and the ability to cascade up to 122 SAS or SATA drives.
