Avago Releases Optical Fibre Channel Transceiver

Posted by Arthur Cole Jan 2, 2008 10:09:15 AM

Optical technology continues to push the envelope for SAN connectivity. A company called Avago Technologies has developed an 8 Gbps SFP optical transceiver designed for Fibre Channel applications.

The AFBR-57D5APZ (a catchy name if ever there was one) is said to double the performance of existing Fibre Channel optical devices, offering signaling rates up to 8.5 Gbps with no external rate-select inputs.

The company also included a digital diagnostic interface that provides the ability to monitor both the transmitter and receiver and disable them in the face of rising faults or signal loss.

The unit is available in links up to 150 meters, with 300- and 500-meter versions available as well, but at rates of 4.25 and 2.125 Gbps respectively.
