Alas, Poor Nortel

Arthur Cole

Well, it's a sad turn of events for Nortel. The company filed for bankruptcy after all despite having some promising technologies in the pipeline.

And while it's unlikely that the company will emerge from the process resembling anything close to its current structure, if at all, the silver lining on the cloud is that there's still a lot of value in its business units, particularly its enterprise and carrier Ethernet division.

So there's a strong likelihood that they will either be folded into a rival or spun off on their own, provided they receive venture capital support (no small thing these days.)

Either way, expect to see those technologies hit the market at some point. And if a leaner, more focused Nortel does emerge from the ashes, it'll have nowhere to go but up.
