Advantech Taps Nehalem for App Acceleration

Arthur Cole

The new Xeon 5500 (Nehalem) is finding its way into more than servers and desktops.

Advantech just announced a new application acceleration appliance designed for multi-core security and high-bandwidth applications on high-speed Ethernet networks. The FWA-6500 sports two of the quad core 5500s, giving it eight core/16 thread performance across 16 front-end GE ports, with either four Intel quad Ethernet modules or duel 10 GbE modules.

A further boost in throughput comes via a 32-way PCIe midplane directing traffic to the controller hub, with two additional internal PCIe x4 slots for off-loading or NPU co-processing. It also holds up to 48 GB of DDR3 memory, plus two swappable SATA drives and a backup power unit.

The system can be accessed via an internal remote management board that provides serial and USB connectivity, along with a pair of LAN ports for remote and out-of-band management. It also supports Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) 2.0 and affords remote monitoring and power cycling.
