6 G SAS Ready for the Channel

Arthur Cole

6 Gbps SAS will likely become a fact of life before you know it as the list of OEM designers integrating chip-level technologies continues to grow.

The latest to join the ranks is Super Micro Computer, which recently tapped LSI's 6 G ROC (RAID-on-Chip) and MegaRAID products for systems ranging from entry-level to enterprise-class.

The 6 Gbps version of SAS effectively doubles the transfer rate of current 3 G solutions, adding crucial bandwidth just as enterprises are starting to tax their current infrastructures with virtualization and cloud computing.

Most industry observers expect to see standalone 6 G SAS devices and components to appear first, probably by the middle of the year. Integrated systems are expected by the fourth quarter.

LSI has already lined up Dell, Fujitsu Siemens, IBM, Intel, NEC and Sun Microsystems for its integrated systems.
