100G Infiniband for the Long Haul

Arthur Cole

I've written before about long-haul Infiniband networks. Now it seems the movement is about to kick into high gear, literally.

Obsidian Strategics and ADVA Optical Networking have developed a 100 Gbps Infiniband link based on the dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) format. The system combines Obsidian's new Longbow C Series of Infiniband range-extension products with ADVA's optical transport systems.

The companies say the solution will provide for new forms of storage area networks, cluster infrastructures and remote visualization applications. It has the ability to scale up to 80 4X SDR Infiniband links through a single fiber, with run lengths extending into the tens of kilometers.

No word yet on when the system will hit the channel.
