Will Force.com Invade the OS Space?

Lora Bentley

InfoWorld blogger Ephraim Schwartz posed an interesting question yesterday: Is Salesforce Planning to Offer an Online Operating System Next?

Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff said something while fleshing out the announcement of the company's Visualforce UI as a service that makes Schwartz think the company is positioning itself for head-on competition with Windows. From his post:

What, it seems to me, Benioff hinted at was that Visualforce combined with all the other platform components beneath it could, in fact, rival Microsoft Windows, at least as a quasi-operating system.

This occurred when Benioff ticked off the many different types of devices for which developers could use Visualforce to design a user interface.

Among those devices were laptops, desktops, mobile devices and even medical devices.

So what do you think? Will Salesforce's "platform-as-a-service" give traditional operating systems a run for their money?
