Sun, Ericsson Work Toward Java-based Server

The same day that Sun Microsystems announced it had released JDK for Java Platform Standard Edition under the GNU General Public License v2, the company also announced it is teaming up with Ericsson to develop a Java-based server platform.

ITPro reports that Ericsson has agreed to contribute part of its server development to Sun's GlassFish open source project. The goal is to develop a server platform for multimedia applications, the story says.

Sun's press release says developers and independent software vendors will be able to use the resulting product, the Sun Java System Communications Application Server, to build things like VoIP, messaging and multimedia into their Java applications. Ericsson will license the technology, which will then be embedded in Ericsson solutions.
