The latest from IDC is that the trend toward open source software is pervasive, invading nearly 75 percent of organizations and in production in more than half of them.
The analyst firm recently surveyed 5,000 developers in 116 countries. Based on its findings, IDC says that open source is "the most significant all-encompassing and long-term" software trend in more than 20 years, and that the industry will see the day when open source becomes part of every software lifecycle -- type or category of software notwithstanding.
So the debate begun earlier this month by Guy Smith and the Enterprise Irregulars, and continued by Alfresco's Matt Asay, continues. Whether open source will control the industry or the enterprise remains to be seen, but it is certainly making a significant impact if IDC analysts are coming to conclusions like this one.
