Mozilla to Spin Thunderbird into Its Own Company

Posted by Lora Bentley Sep 18, 2007 9:07:16 AM

We knew Mozilla was considering it. Today, TechShout reports it will indeed happen. The company behind the popular Firefox Web browser is devoting a new unit to its Thunderbird e-mail client and all things mail.

ActiveState CTO David Aschter will join Mozilla to lead the new organization, which will also build Internet communications software based on Thunderbird. Mozilla Foundation chair Mitchell Baker notes:

Innovating in mail and communications advances our vision of choice across the spectrum of Internet software. David has been a respected member of the Mozilla community for many years and we're excited that he is joining Mozilla to lead this important effort.

Mozilla will provide $43 million in to get the "mail-centric" company up and running, TechShout says.
