Months after first discussing the possibility, Mozilla has spun off a separate organization that will concentrate solely on its Thunderbird messaging tool. vnunet.com reports Mozilla Messaging began operations on Tuesday.
Chief executive David Ascher heads up what vnunet calls "a small product development team" whose work will be supplemented by a global community of contributors. Their initial focus will be development of Thunderbird 3.0. Ascher says of the effort:
We are excited to renew the focus of our open source community on the future of Thunderbird. Every one of us is committed to building a great e-mail product that people will love to use and that serves as the foundation for choice in a critical area of Internet software.
