Let's face it: Google dominates the search space. Heck, the company even dominates the tech media -- for better or worse.
Earlier this year, Wikia announced it would be launching a project to develop an open source search engine. Today, InformationWeek reports that Wikia has hired Jeremie Miller to head up that project. Miller is perhaps best known as the creator of the Jabber open source instant messenger.
Granted, the Wikia engine itself probably won't make much of a dent in Google's market share -- not even Yahoo or Microsoft has been able to do that -- but if the product takes off and the code is used by other companies to create similar open source search engines, Google's stronghold on the search market might just loosen a bit.
