Intel Opens Fibre Channel over Ethernet Software

Lora Bentley

In an effort to increase adoption of Fibre Channel over Ethernet, and to encourage quicker development of the drivers and protocols necessary to use it, Intel announced on Tuesday that it has released Open-FCoE under the GNU General Public License version 2. It is available for download now at

As TechSpot writer Justin Mann explains:

The advantage of FCoE is to have one less medium that traffic is carried upon, with Ethernet taking on a more responsible role in high-bandwidth situations.

In the press release announcing the project, Pat Gelsinger, senior vice president and general manger of Intel's Digital Enterprise Group, says:

FCoE makes it easier and less expensive to connect servers to the SAN. We're taking a leadership role by releasing this stack and supporting industry standardization efforts.
