IDC: Open Source Market to Reach $5.8 Billion

Lora Bentley

A new report from IDC says the standalone open source software market will reach $5.8 billion by 2011. IDC's open source business model program director cautions, however, that the growth in revenue will lag behind the actual distribution of open source software in enterprise organizations. The difference occurs because most paid open source distributions are "pay-as-you go" subscriptions rather than upfront license fees, Matt Lawton says.

The increased adoption of open source is driven by increased customer interest, more support from venture capital firms, and growing comfort with subscription-based business, leading to a 26 percent compound annual growth rate between 2006 and 2007, according to EFY Times.

This is encouraging, but the real figures should probably be much higher. IDC is very biased. Reply
