Check out research by HIMSS on spending priorities and electronic medical records adoption plans.

Thursday I mentioned a new study from the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society on health IT spending. I pointed out that 42 percent of those who responded said their biggest IT priority for 2010 was making sure they meet the "meaningful use" requirements for electronic medical records systems.

The survey also showed that the biggest clinical IT priority for respondents is ensuring that their organizations have full electronic medical records systems. That may be motivated by the fact that 47 percent of respondents plan to be eligble for the meaningful use incentives provided for in the HITECH Act by next year.

Not surprisingly, 47 percent said their 2010 IT budgets would increase over 2009 budgets, and 49 percent of those respondents cited meaningful use as the primary reason for the increase.

All of them want a piece of the incentive pie.
