Facebook's New Web OS Possibilities

Lora Bentley

In case you haven't heard, Facebook just bought its first company. CIO Today reports that the social networking site acquired startup Parakey yesterday for an undisclosed amount.

Parakey was launched last year by Firefox creators Blake Ross and Joe Hewitt, the story says, to develop applications that combine the best of the desktop and the Web. Ross calls the company's yet-to-be-released product a "Web operating system that can do anything an OS can do," according to Techworld.

In a Facebook press release announcing the purchase, founder and CEO Mark Zuckerburg says of Ross and Hewitt:

The work they've done with Firefox and Parakey and their approach to building products fit right in at Facebook.

They are expected to work both on Facebook's Web site and on its open development platform.
