European Think Tank Calls for OS-Free PCs

Lora Bentley

A European think tank is calling on the European Commission to require PC makers to unbundle Microsoft Windows from new computers to stimulate competition and innovation in the operating system market, according to The Inquirer.

The Globalisation Institute cites the EC's recent court victory requiring Microsoft to unbundle its media player from Windows in making its case that a choice of desktop operating systems is necessary if the OS market in the EU is to thrive. Requiring Windows to be unbundled from PCs and laptops will foster competition in the OS space similar to that for hardware components, the story says, as well as reduce prices for customers.
