EU in 'Exploratory Talks' with Microsoft, Yahoo

Lora Bentley

The U.S. Department of Justice antitrust division has already asked Microsoft and Yahoo for more details on their pending search deal. Now, Reuters reports the European Commission is in talks with the two companies about the specifics as well. The story quotes an unnamed source to say that the talks are "ongoing" and "informal."

Unlike the EU's inquiry into Oracle's acquisition of Sun Microsystems, where the Commission set out specific concerns it had regarding the deal's effect on the database market in Europe, these talks are more exploratory, the source indicated.

Of course, the fact that the EU and Microsoft have an ongoing discussion about the software juggernaut's business practices as a result of a previous antitrust settlement is probably enough to pique the Commission's interest in the proposed search deal with Yahoo.
