VMware Expands Its SMB Offerings

VMware just came out with a slew of upgrades to its Virtual Infrastructure, duly noted by IT Business Edge blogger Art Cole, many of which should be welcomed by SMBs.

An Info-Tech Research Group analyst tells eChannelLine columnist Paul Weinberg that VMware's new bundles of SMB-oriented offerings offer far more functionality than its previous entry-level products, and at an attractive price.

VMware Infrastructure 3 Foundation, for example, includes VMware ESX Server, VMware ESX Server 3i, VMware Consolidated Backup and the new VMware Update Manager -- "all of the pieces that you need to start building virtual infrastructure on servers," says the analyst. The suggested list price is $995 for two processors.

Three different Acceleration Kits, priced from $2,995 to $5,995, are designed to ease migration from physical to virtual servers. One of the kits features a Guided Consolidation tool that scans a network and offers recommendations on where and how to consolidate servers. Another has a High Availability tool that allows SMBs to monitor both physical and virtual servers, an improvement from previous versions that monitored only physical servers.

VMW's engineers and programmers must be absolutely brilliant - to have managed to design and build all of the bridgework we read about that has apparently been created (or much of it) even since the virtualization convention VMW recently sponsored. It's simply astounding me. So is the stock's movement on the market! Incredible, all of it! LJ Reply
