Google Wants to Grab SMBs with Hosted Search Service

Many SMB Web sites have search engines that offer unsatisfactory results -- or lack such an engine at all.

That's the target market for Google's latest business-oriented product release, which offers SMBs the same technology used on the search giant's ubiquitous consumer engine.

Based on a recent TIME article, the Custom Search Business Edition, which will be hosted by Google, also apparently offers both the simplicity and price points that are so attractive to SMBs.

According to a Google product manager, the setup process rarely takes more than 10 minutes and can be completed entirely online, unless a site contains more than 50,000 pages that need to be searched. The annual cost ranges from $100 for up to 5,000 Web pages, to $500 for 50,000 pages.

While Google has offered businesses a free version of this product since last October, they had to agree to display ads selected by Google and also to direct their search traffic through Google's site. Both of these requirements are eliminated with Custom Search Business Edition.

This announcement comes hot on the heels of other recent moves to win the favor of SMBs, including a distribution deal with Ingram Micro and Google's acquisition of Postini.
