In the Cloud or on the Golf Course, Hazards Can Be Devastating

At the Black Hat 2015 conference this week, Alert Logic announced the general availability of a vulnerability and configuration management service specifically designed for Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud computing environments.

Rahul Bakshi, senior director of product for Alert Logic, says Cloud Insight is designed to provide security controls for the applications and services running on top of AWS. Delivered as a software-as-as-service (SaaS) application, Bakshi says Cloud Insight plugs directly into AWS application programming interfaces (APIs) to give IT organizations the ability to monitor those applications in a way that leverages the security services for infrastructure that AWS already provides.

Not every customer, says Bakshi, realizes that while AWS provides a robust set of security services for the infrastructure it provides, customers are on their own when it comes to applications. Once a vulnerability is discovered, IT organizations can then use Alert Logic Cloud Insight to remediate it, says Bakshi.

When it comes moving to the cloud, security has been the number one issue holding most organizations back from either putting workloads in the cloud or expanding the number they already have in the cloud. To help accelerate that process, Bakshi says Alert Logic is focusing first on making sure the largest cloud service is secure at both the application and infrastructure level.

Most IT organizations don’t have security management software that can extend to AWS, and there may come a day when they will want to unify the management of on-premise and cloud security. But for the time being, IT organizations that have workloads running on AWS have a pressing need to address application security issues starting today.
