Seven Ways to Make Big Data an Actionable Opportunity

October was a busy month for integration announcements. A few news highlights from the past week include:

Oracle Amps Up Data Integration Portfolio

Big announcements in October for Oracle included the upgrades to Oracle Data Integrator 12c and Oracle GoldenGate 12c. Oracle says these “future proof” updates are one of the biggest to data integration in years. What that means is more support for cloud, real-time, analytics, Big Data and other new projects that require integration of new types of data. Integration Developer News offers a thorough summary of the improvements.

    Informatica Targets Internet of Things

I’m fascinated by the Internet of Things and the integration challenges it will create.

Informatica apparently is too, since this week it announced a new “streaming data collection technology” targeted at managing the Internet of Things through Hadoop.

It’s called Informatica Vibe Data Stream for Machine Data, and is essentially a plug-in for Hadoop to help collect machine data and move it into Hadoop. It uses Informatica Vibe, which is an embeddable virtual data machine.

eWeek has the details on this new offering.

New Talend Platform Optimized for Yarn

This year’s Hadoop Summit saw the unveiling of YARN, which stands for “yet another resource negotiator.” It re-architects Hadoop, so that it can now process more than just MapReduce jobs.

Talend for Big Data, v. 5.4 is optimized to run inside Hadoop by leveraging YARN, which it calls MapReduce 2.0.

Talend is claiming the title of “the only integration solution running inside Hadoop,” according to a press release.

YARN provides the engine for the data integration work. The new release also allows developers to optimize MapReduce jobs and use Hadoop for data cleansing and data quality tasks, and it supports Hadoop security with Kerberos.

Earlier this month, Hortonworks released the first Hadoop distribution based on YARN.

Charity Edition of Hadoop Tool to Help Save Elephants

Fun fact about Hadoop: Hadoop was first the name of a stuffed animal beloved by Doug Cutting’s son. That’s why many vendors use elephants in their logos and you always see elephant pictures in articles about the Big Data stack.

Datameer is a Big Data analytics solution for Hadoop, and today the company took the unusual step of issuing a $49 Charity edition.

During this month, 100 percent of the proceeds will be used to benefit elephants orphaned by the ivory trade in Africa, a spokesperson said. The money will be donated to Pro Wildlife, a Germany-based charity dedicated to the conservation of wildlife, including the elephant young orphaned by poachers.

“With a yellow elephant as our logo and a projected $24 billion market value, we believe the Big Data and Hadoop community can stand up and help the elephants,” said Stefan Groschupf, CEO of Datameer, in a press release.

Datameer Charity Edition offers the same functionalities as Datameer Personal Edition and comes with Hadoop embedded. A single user can deploy it to integrate, analyze and visualize up to 10GB of data. It includes a point-and-click interface for integrating with more than 50 common data sources.
