The Six Deadly Sins of Project Management Leadership

With all eyes on the unfolding drama of the disastrous rollout of the federal website for the administration of the Affordable Care Act, the value of IT project management is having a moment. The post mortem on this entire project would have been enormous even if it had gone relatively smoothly. But it hasn’t, and IT project failures and the lessons learned from them are key learning tools for project management professionals.

This week also brings the 10th International Project Management Day, hosted by the International Institute for Learning. Starting Thursday, November 7, the agenda, centered around the theme of “The Future of Business,” includes four keynotes:

  • Lessons Learned Can Create New Opportunities
  • Organizational Survival: Profitable Strategies for a Sustainable Future
  • From Great Kids to Grateful Leaders the Whole Foods Way
  • The National Ignition Facility: Pathway to Energy Security and Physics of the Cosmos

The goal of the programming is to examine actionable strategies and skills in industries from IT to health care, finance and more. Speaker topics cover establishing PMOs, hiring project management staff, social media, project sponsorship and ITIL, among others.

Registration includes 30 days of access to conference materials, much of it in video format, and the opportunity to earn professional development units (PDUs) for project management professionals.
